Visit Bourtange - A Historical Star Shaped Village In The Netherlands

Bourtange - A Star-Shaped Village

Tucked away near the German border in the northern province of Groningen lies Bourtange. Famous for its perfectly preserved star-shaped fortifications seen from the sky, Bourtange is a perfect half-day trip if you want to see a historical village in the Northern Netherlands.

A Fortress Frozen in Time

Bourtange was originally built in 1593 during the Eighty Years’ War under the orders of William of Orange. Its strategic location allowed the Dutch to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen. The village’s unique star-shaped design, complete with moats and ramparts, was a revolutionary example of military architecture in the 16th century. Today, visitors can still marvel at its defensive structures, which have been meticulously restored.

Walking Through History

Walking through Bourtange, you’ll find historical reenactments, charming houses that now serve as shops and cafés, and small museums like the Captain’s House and the Synagogue Museum.

A Day-Trip Getaway

The central square hosts markets and festivals, giving visitors a chance to sample local delicacies and crafts. Whether you’re sipping Dutch beer or browsing handmade souvenirs, it is a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The village is especially beautiful in the autumn and winter, so it is worth taking a trip for the Christmas market. It is a tiny village - one or two hours is enough to explore the whole place, from walking around the buildings and seeing the village from the walking paths. It is a friendly village perfect for families and a fun playground for children to spend some time, or elderly people or couples who want to have a short day-trip getaway.

Nature and Surroundings

Surrounded by scenic landscapes, Bourtange is also a haven for nature lovers. Cycling and walking routes lead through the lush Groningen countryside, where flat fields and big skies create a quintessential Dutch panorama. Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy the nearby wetlands, which are home to a wide variety of species.

If you are looking for a coffee, we recommend the café by the white church, where you can walk in on the sidewalk across the circled centrum. There are not too many restaurant options, however, you can bring your picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

If you’re looking for a destination that combines history, culture, and natural beauty, Bourtange is a hidden historical sight worth discovering. It’s a place where the past comes alive, and it is an interesting observation with lots of tranquility and cottage core aesthetics.
